ABSTRACT

Background and Aim: Estrus synchronization of ewes has been accomplished using several protocols with various degrees of success in improving reproductive efficiency and obtaining the most effective protocol used in sheep farming. This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of three treatment protocols and to record the intensity and duration of estrus signs and pregnancy rate in Barbados Black Belly (BBB) sheep. Materials and Methods: Thirty-two primipara BBB ewes aged 18-24 months were equally divided into three treatment groups. T1: the ewes were injected intramuscularly with 2 mL Lutalyse (PGF2α) (10 mg) on days 0 and 10. T2: 1 mL Fertiline (50 µg; Gonadorelin acetate) on day 0 and 2 mL lutalyse (10 mg) on day 7. T3: 1 mL fertiline (50 µg) on day 0, 2 mL lutalyse (10 mg) on day 7, and 1 mL Fertiline (50 µg) on day 9. Estrus response was assessed using naturally mating rams and ewes. Pregnancy was determined using ultrasonography between 55 and 80 days after the last hormonal injection. The following estrus signs were noted: Swollen vulva, mucus discharge, sniffing, excitement, loss of appetite, mounting, and rapid tail movement. Results: Of the expressed signs, swollen vulva was most frequent, whereas loss of appetite and mucus discharge were the least overt signs recorded. The estrus response (%), onset (%), and duration (h) in ewe synchronization of the three treatment protocols were 100%, 58.3 ± 23.4%, and 48.0 ± 18.2 h (T1), 100%, 61.7 ± 41.2%, and 45.0 ± 27.0 h (T2), and 37.5%, 32.1 ± 1.7%, and 29.2 ± 1.25 h (T3), respectively. The pregnancy rates were 87.5%, 87.5%, 37.5%, and 50.0% in T1, T2, T3, and T4, respectively. Conclusion: Prostaglandin F2α+PGF2α and GnRH+PGF2α synchronization protocols were more effective in the fertilization of BBB ewes with better expression of estrus signs compared with the GnRH+PGF2α+GnRH (OVS) protocol.

ABSTRACT: The study used PCR to determine the molecular basis of the antibiotic resistance and virulence profiles of isolates of Salmonella by targeting genes encoding for carriage and persistence in the poultry. Of a total 1,503 cecal samples collected from poultry, 91 (6.1%) were positive for Salmonella. Ten different serotypes were detected from Salmonella isolates. The study was also conducted to determine the occurrence of 13 virulence and 12 resistance genes in isolates of Salmonella. All 46 isolates of Salmonella tested were positive for one or more of the 12 virulence genes detected, ranging from 0.0% (viaB) to 100.0% (invA, mgtB, pipA, and spi4D) (P < 0.05). Occurrence of virulence genes varied significantly (P < 0.05) by serotype but not by animal species. Only 4 (33.3%) of 12 resistance genes assayed were detected: strA, ampC, cmy2, and qnrB. Overall, the occurrence of detected resistance genes was 71.7% (33 of 46), and 87.1 and 40.0% of the isolates from chickens and ducks, respectively, were positive (P = 0.0009). The occurrence of resistance genes ranged from 2.2% (cmy2) to 50.0% (qnrB) in isolates positive for resistance gene. The findings provide evidence that poultry from "pluck shops" are colonized by Salmonella pathogens that harbor virulence and antimicrobial resistance genes; this may have clinical and therapeutic consequences, if the genes detected are expressed. Although there is a need for prudent use of antimicrobial agents in poultry production systems, there should be constant monitoring for the prevalence of resistance in Salmonella isolates using phenotypic methods. The importance of monitoring the occurrence of resistance genes in the pathogens in Trinidad cannot be ignored.

ABSTRACT

Downscaling limitations and limited write/erase cycles in conventional charge-storage based non-volatile memories stimulate the development of emerging memory devices having enhanced performance. Resistive random-access memory (RRAM) devices are recognized as the next-generation memory devices for employment in artificial intelligence and neuromorphic computing, due to their smallest cell size, high write/erase speed and endurance. Unipolar and bipolar resistive switching characteristics in graphene oxide (GO) have been extensively studied in recent years, whereas the study of non-polar and complementary switching is scarce. Here we fabricated GO-based RRAM devices with gold nanoparticles (Au Nps). Diverse types of switching behavior are observed by changing the processing methods and device geometry. Tri-layer GO-based devices illustrated non-polar resistive switching, which is a combination of unipolar and bipolar switching. Five-layer GO-based devices depicted complementary resistive switching having the lowest current values ~12 µA; and this structure is capable of resolving the sneak path issue. Both devices show good retention and endurance performance. Au Nps in tri-layer devices assisted the conducting path, whereas in five-layer devices, Au Nps layer worked as common electrodes between co-joined cells. These GO-based devices with Au Nps comprising different configuration are vital for practical applications of emerging non-volatile resistive memories.

ABSTRACT

The aim of the study was to determine the prevalence and zonal distribution of Salmonella serotypes in poultry and to determine the antimicrobial resistance profile of Salmonella isolates. A total of 1,503 cecal samples of poultry were randomly collected from 33 pluck shops across Trinidad. Isolation and identification of Salmonella followed standard methods, and the disk diffusion method was used to determine resistance of isolates to 14 antimicrobial agents. Ninety-one (6.1%) of the 1,503 samples collected from four zones were positive for Salmonella. The frequency of isolation of Salmonella from chicken ceca (6.5%) was higher than that detected in duck ceca (5.1%), but the difference was not statistically significant (P > 0.05). Ten serotypes were detected, with Salmonella Molade, Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica I, and Salmonella Typhimurium the most prevalent at 56.0, 11.0, and 8.8%, respectively. The highest frequency of isolation of Salmonella was recorded in the northeast zone (59.3%). All 91 isolates exhibited resistance to at least 1 of the 14 antimicrobial agents. The highest frequency of resistance was exhibited to ampicillin (51.0%), kanamycin (49.5%), and streptomycin (37.4%). A total of 22 resistance patterns were exhibited by the 91 isolates of Salmonella, and 13 isolates (14.3%) exhibited multiple drug resistance. The results emphasize the need to implement hygienic practices to reduce the levels of contamination at poultry pluck shops and the need for prudent use of antimicrobial agents in the poultry production system in Trinidad.

ABSTRACT

Conventional T1- or T2-weighted single mode contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) may produce false results. Thereby, there is a need to develop dual contrast agents, T1- and T2-weighted, for more accurate MRI imaging. The dual contrast agents should possess high magnetic resonance (MR) relaxivities, targeted tumor linking, and minimum recognition by the immune system. We have developed nitrodopamine-PEG grafted single core truncated cubic iron oxide nanoparticles (ND-PEG-tNCIOs) capable of producing marked dual contrasts in MRI with enhanced longitudinal and transverse relaxivities of 32 ± 1.29 and 791 ± 38.39 mM-1 s-1, respectively. Furthermore, the ND-PEG-tNCIOs show excellent colloidal stability in physiological buffers and higher cellular internalization in cancerous cells than in phagocytic cells, indicating the immune evasive capability of the nanoparticles. These findings indicate that tNCIOs are strong candidates for dual contrast MRI imaging, which is vital for noninvasive real-time detection of nascent cancer cells in vivo and for monitoring stem cells transplants.

ABSTRACT

Forming-free resistive random access memory (ReRAM) devices having low switching voltages are a prerequisite for their commercial applications. In this study, the forming-free resistive switching characteristics of graphene oxide (GO) films embedded with gold nanoparticles (Au Nps), having an enhanced on/off ratio at very low switching voltages, were investigated for non-volatile memories. The GOAu films were deposited by the electrophoresis method and as-grown films were found to be in the low resistance state; therefore no forming voltage was required to activate the devices for switching. The devices having an enlarged on/off ratio window of ∼10(6) between two resistance states at low voltages (<1 V) for repetitive dc voltage sweeps showed excellent properties of endurance and retention. In these films Au Nps were uniformly dispersed over a large area that provided charge traps, which resulted in improved switching characteristics. Capacitance was also found to increase by a factor of ∼10, when comparing high and low resistance states in GOAu and pristine GO devices. Charge trapping and de-trapping by Au Nps was the mechanism responsible for the improved switching characteristics in the films.

ABSTRACT

The existence of ferromagnetism in the wonder material graphene has opened up the path for many future spintronics and memory applications. But simultaneously it is very important to understand the variation of these properties with temperature in regards to the device applications. Here we observed defect induced ferromagnetism in chemically reduced graphene and the effect of temperature on it. Several theoretical studies have proved that the main cause of ferromagnetism in graphene is due to various defects. The observed results established that these defects can be mended by treating the samples at elevated temperatures but sacrificing the ferromagnetism simultaneously. Hence, temperature plays a crucial role in controlling the magnetism as well as the defects in graphene. In this study we revealed that at 600 °C the self-repair mechanism helps the defects to mend but resulting in the decrement of magnetization and providing a good quality graphene with less defects.
